The collapse of the Earth’s Upper Atmosphere has researchers baffled. John Emmert of the Naval Research Lab says “It’s a Space Age record. This is the biggest contraction of the thermosphere in at least 43 years. We will continue to monitor the situation.” Thankfully, the atmosphere is rebounding again.
The magnitude of the collapse was two to three times greater than usually occurs and can be explained by low solar activity. The earth’s atmosphere shields us from the sun’s extreme ultra violet (EUV) radiation. Without this shield there would be no life, as we know it, on the planet. This type of collapse is not rare, but its magnitude shocked scientists.
