You can spend a life time trying to keep up with the search engines and getting ranked so that you show up in searches. The biggest mistake is NOT putting a lot of planning and keyword research into action prior to putting up your landing page. I have a poster on my wall that says FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. I get distracted easily and it’s easy to get sidetracked. But focusing on your keywords when you write your content is extremely important. Not only does the content have to be rich and interesting for your readers but it has to be keyword concentrated so that the search engines zero in on what your subject matter really is, if it is worth indexing and how much exposure they are going to give you.
Ranking is an art but it’s not rocket science. As mentioned in my previous post SEO Target Marketing you need to focus on good Title Tags, using meaningful phrase targets in your description and keyword Meta Tags, create good “Context”, not just “Content”, create backlinks from sites with related content and good copywriting that focuses on your keywords.
Each page you create within your website should have a unique Title Tag but the home page title tag is the most important one. Since it is usually the landing page it will be the first source of content that web crawlers assess when ranking your site. When writing your title tag think of it as an introduction to your website; something that will draw in interested viewers/visitors.
Creating unique content is also important. If you just copy and paste articles that someone else has written it will be picked up by the search engines as duplicate content. Duplicate content is considered by Google to be “blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar…in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or garner more traffic via popular or long-tail queries.” Make sure your content is original or you will get the Google Slap.
To help you make sure your content is original you can use a simple duplicate content comparison tool at: http://duplicatecontent.net/. That will give you a measure of how similiar your content is and if you need to make changes to make it MORE original.
Last tip is to use your keywords in your H1 and H2 tags. But make sure that it pertains to the content within those paragraphs.
In conclusion, choose your keywords wisely. Use them when creating your website content. Always remember, the keywords you choose are paramount to the content you write. When writing your content FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS.
