News Quest: VIRAL MARKETING

I have the viral marketing bug and I don’t want a cure! What is Viral Marketing? Viral Marketing simply is a way to market an idea, product or information with lightening speed. It duplicates itself and spreads “like a virus” and thus the name.

Don’t confuse it with a computer virus which will harm or even destroy the information on your computer. It is not harmful. It was only a name given to this type of marketing because it’s like gossip and the word is spread quickly.

But just like gossip, it must be “buzz worthy”. In other words, it must be interesting enough that one person will pass it on to a friend, and that friend passes it on to several of their friends and it goes on spreading like … a virus !

If you want to use the viral marketing technique you either have to have a product, idea or information that will be of value to many different people. By giving it away to them, and IF they find it valuable, they will give it away to someone else. There can be an incentive attached, that if they do give it away then they will receive something extra and perhaps even more valuable.

That is the key: It MUST be something of value that people are looking for and want.

So how can viral marketing help if you are giving away something for free?
1. It builds a relationship, if you give someone something of value they will be interested in your other offers
2. It can be a carrot on a stick, that gets them to join your membership site, group, or affiliate program.

That’s the basics. Here’s a great example of viral marketing:
